The Story Behind Kalyvitis Eco Farm: Slow Living in Crete

At Kalyvitis Eco Farm, self-sufficiency lies at the heart of everyday life. The owners, Heidi and Manu, chose to change their lives completely in order to dedicate themselves to a simpler, more conscious way of living, deeply connected to the land, nature, and the rhythms of rural life in Crete. Surrounded by more than 500 olive trees, Kalyvitis produces small-scale biological products with care and respect for nature. From olive oil to wine, honey, goat cheese, fresh eggs, homemade bread, and seasonal vegetables from the garden, almost everything is produced and prepared traditionally by the owners themselves. More than a farm stay, Kalyvitis offers guests the opportunity to reconnect with the origins of food and slow living. Working with the soil, harvesting, and experiencing how food is naturally produced becomes part of everyday life here; a return to simplicity, authenticity, and the awakening of all your senses.

How to reach Kalyvitis Eco farm

Kalyvitis is a small traditional settlement in the Lassithi region of southern Crete, surrounded by olive groves, mountains, and the wild landscapes of the island’s countryside. Hidden away from mass tourism, it offers a tranquil destination for slow travel and nature-based experiences, from hiking and swimming to cultural exploration and discovering the authentic rhythm of rural Crete.

Your journey to Kalyvitis Eco Farm can begin from either of Crete’s two international airports: Heraklion International Airport (HER) or Chania International Airport (CHQ). Both offer rental car options and good connections for travelling across the island.

From Heraklion Airport, the drive takes you along the northern coast towards Agios Nikolaos and then south towards Ierapetra and Kalyvitis.

From there, you continue along the scenic southern route, passing mountains, small villages, and sea views. From Chania Airport, you cross the island from west to east, travelling through beautiful Cretan landscapes before reaching the Lassithi region and the southern coast.

For those using public transport, regular KTEL buses connect both Heraklion and Chania with Ierapetra. From Ierapetra, you can continue by taxi or local transfer towards Mavros Kolympos, the nearest point to the farm.

From Mavros Kolympos, the road slowly climbs into the mountains. Turn towards Orino, follow the scenic route for about 2 km, then take the right onto the small concrete road. After a short drive, you will arrive at Kalyvitis Eco Farm, surrounded by olive trees and peaceful nature.

The owners are always happy to assist with directions, arrival planning, or local tips.
