Slow Travel Greece is an initiative to shift the mindset of travelers from tourists to thoughtful explorers.
Do you think we can make it?

When I visited the lake island of Agios Achillios in Prespes in the fall of 2015, I was truly amazed by its authenticity, untouched natural beauty, and the unparalleled hospitality that set it apart from other destinations.
Everything, from accommodations to restaurants, reflected exceptional quality. I can still vividly recall the boat ride on the lake, as local fisherman Mr. Nikos shared fascinating stories about the icons on the rocks along the shores of Great Prespa Lake and the significance of the tripoint where North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece meet.
The warm talks with the locals, the sight of cows wandering around our dinner table in Psarades village, the green boat gliding on the small Prespa lake, the water buffaloes bathing, the migratory birds nesting along the reed-fringed shores of Agios Achillios Island, the 650-meter-long floating bridge connecting the land to Agios Achillios, and the golden sunlight reflected in the Basilica of Saint Achillius, standing there since the 10th century A.D., all sparked a deep desire to support communities just as this adorable one, in remote areas of Greece.
And just like that, some years later, Slow Travel Greece was born.
the mission
The mission of Slow Travel Greece is to empower rural communities and promote the Slow Travel philosophy, the low-impact tourism, and the Slow Living lifestyle as an antidote to mental and physical exhaustion.
Slow Travel Greece suggests mindful travelling on a sustainable way based on four principles:
A slower approach to travel protects the environment and enables the traveller to discover new destinations, cultures, and traditions deeply.
Slow Travel Greece responsibly presents crowd-free Slow Travel destinations across the country and eco-friendly accommodation options located in villages, settlements, and rural areas in Greece with plenty of wide-open spaces to explore.
Low-carbon transport options are encouraged. A car-free lifestyle has a lower impact on the environment. Take a local bus or train, cycle around or discover a destination on foot at your own pace.
A hint of Hiking & biking routes are listed in our Hiking in Greece category which you can read
The protection and support of local communities are essential for their existence. The family-owned hotels, traditional guesthouses & eco-friendly farms presented are small-to-medium-sized and co-operate with local food suppliers and businesses.
Live like a local! Eat locally grown food, explore on foot and buy local, seasonal products.
Disconnect from routine, reconnect with nature. Emphasizing the mental & physical health benefits of travelling, we suggest activities that focus on wellness, personal development & creativity.
Remember: All handpicked destinations need to be thoughtfully explored!

Let us see Slow Travel as the one and only choice of sustainable tourism.

''Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.'' Lao Tzu
Living in a fast-paced world, people repeatedly defer their happiness to a later date by sacrificing their present for the ‘perfect future’, that may never come.
Slowness is the antidote to angst.
By slowing down, we live in the moment and create space for self-growth and personal freedom.
