Situated just below Katafidi Peak (2,393m), the highest and most recognizable summit of Tzoumerka in the Ioannina regional unit of Epirus, Greece, the refuge is more than just a scenic stop for coffee – it is a welcoming place to rest and recharge. The shelter offers comfortable sleeping arrangements, an organized and fully equipped kitchen, and serves both hot and cold drinks, as well as freshly prepared meals.
Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, the refuge provides access to a range of alpine activities, including hiking, mountaineering, and ice climbing. Those seeking a more immersive nature experience can camp free of charge; however, access to the refuge’s facilities requires a small fee. With its prime location in the heart of the Tzoumerka mountain range, the refuge serves as the perfect base for exploring breathtaking trails, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints, making it an essential destination for mountain lovers.

Valia Calda mountain refuge

The Valia Calda Refuge is situated in Vovousa, a picturesque mountain village in Eastern Zagori. Nestled at an altitude of 1,050 meters, the refuge is surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Aoos River, which flows through the village, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. This prime location makes it an excellent base for exploring the Pindus National Park, one of Greece’s most pristine and biodiverse natural reserves.
The Valia Calda Refuge serves as a key connecting point for three major mountaineering routes within the North Pindos National Park:
Metsovo – Vovousa – Perivoli Vovousa – Distrato – Vasilitsa Metsovo – Vovousa – Central Zagori

Melissourgoi Mountain Refuge

The Melissourgoi Mountain Refuge is a tranquil escape in the heart of the Tzoumerka mountain range, near the village of Melissourgoi in the Arta region of Epirus, Greece. Nestled at 1,023 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
With space for up to 30 guests in shared rooms, the refuge provides modern comforts, including a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy common room with a fireplace, and a playground for families. Adventure seekers can explore a network of scenic hiking trails, leading to striking rock formations, crystal-clear springs, and cascading waterfalls. A must-visit is the Kefalovryso Waterfalls, accessible via a picturesque 40-minute hike through lush forest.

Koziakas mountain refuge

The refuge is located on Mount Koziakas, also known as Kerketion, at the foothills of Astrapi or Chatzipetros Peak (1,901m), where the European E4 trail passes through. Today, Koziakas boasts an extensive network of trails, catering to all levels of hikers—from short and easy routes to more demanding treks.
At the Koziakas Mountain Refuge, visitors can stay overnight or stop for a meal and rest while hiking or biking. The refuge offers a cozy atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning mountain views. Koziakas is a top spot for mountain biking, with a network of trails weaving through its forests.

Trail running is also popular, offering a challenging experience on rugged paths and varied terrain. At the mountain’s foothills, the Pertouli Ski Center sits beside lush meadows, while rock climbing enthusiasts can find excellent routes near Pyli. Explore Koziakas’ trails here.

NORTHWESTERN GREECE

Mountain shelter Smolika

Located in the Ioannina regional unit of northwestern Greece, Mount Smolikas stands at 2,637 meters, making it the highest peak in the Pindus range and the second tallest mountain in Greece, after Mount Olympus. Nestled amidst a lush forest of pine, fir, and cedar, this two-story stone mountain refuge combines modern amenities with safety and comfort.
Accommodating up to 24 guests, it offers a fully equipped kitchen serving breakfast and homemade meals, featuring traditional dishes. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore scenic hiking and cycling trails, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the surrounding wilderness. The refuge is accessible from Konitsa, Zagori via Vrysochori, and the Vasilitsa Ski Center.

Spilios Agapitos Refuge

Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos) is a stone-built mountain refuge located along the E4 trail, which leads to the summit of Mount Olympus. Perched on a strategically positioned rocky outcrop at 2,100m, this inviting refuge serves as an ideal resting point for hikers on their way to the top.
The mountain shelter is spacious and well-equipped, accommodating up to 110 guests in comfortable sleeping quarters. It features fully functional cooking facilities that provide meals in two large dining areas, ensuring visitors are well-fed and energized for their journey. Additionally, essential sanitary amenities are available in both sleeping areas to ensure a comfortable stay.
TZOUMERKA, EPIRUS

Pramanta Mountain Refuge

The Pramanta Mountain Refuge sits at the foot of Strogoula Mountain in Issioma, welcoming visitors year-round. It offers 26 beds across three rooms, each with a private bathroom. Guests should bring their own sheets or sleeping bags. The refuge features a fully equipped kitchen and provides meals with advance arrangement. Reservations can be made by phone. For those passing through, drinks are available in the shared areas and courtyard from 10:00 AM until sunset.

Mount Parnassos Shelter

The Mount Parnassos Shelter is situated at an altitude of 1,820 meters on the western slopes of Gerontovrachos Peak. The Parnassos Mountain Refuge is a cozy retreat nestled on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, one of Greece’s most famous mountains. Located just about 180 km from Athens, it offers a convenient escape for nature lovers, hikers, and adventure seekers.
Compared to Mount Parnitha, which is much closer to Athens (just 40 km away), Parnassos provides a higher-altitude experience with breathtaking views, dense fir forests, and access to the renowned Parnassos Ski Center. The refuge serves as an ideal base for exploring scenic trails, rock climbing, and enjoying winter sports. With comfortable lodging, essential amenities, and stunning surroundings, the Parnassos Mountain Refuge is perfect for a weekend getaway from the city, offering both relaxation and outdoor adventure.
This shelter offers accommodations for up to 33 people across four different rooms. It is named “Michalis Defner” in honor of a distinguished climber and skier who was part of the Greek Battalion of Skiers during World War II, serving on the Greek-Albanian border.
