Part of Greece’s East Macedonia-Thrace National Park—one of the country’s largest wetland parks—this vast ecosystem has been protected since 1971 under the Ramsar Convention for Wetlands of International Importance.

Lake Vistonida is Greece’s fourth-largest lake, with an average depth of 2.5 meters. What makes it truly unique is its dual character: the northern section is freshwater, fed by mountain rivers, while the southern section connects to the Porto Lagos lagoon system and receives brackish seawater, creating shifting salinity levels that support an extraordinary diversity of life.
