A Living Wetland Ecosystem

Lake Vistonida is Greece’s fourth-largest lake, with an average depth of 2.5 meters. What makes it truly unique is its dual character: the northern section is freshwater, fed by mountain rivers, while the southern section connects to the Porto Lagos lagoon system and receives brackish seawater, creating shifting salinity levels that support an extraordinary diversity of life. The shallow waters, reed beds, and river deltas create perfect habitat for resident breeding colonies and seasonal migrants from northern Europe and Asia. Near Porto Lagos, a pine forest shelters a notable mixed heron colony—one of the lake’s ornithological highlights.
